Actress Debra Messing took to Instagram last week to show support for her sonafter he asked for permission to protest the national anthem before a New York Rangers game at Madison Square Garden.
In the since-deleted post, the “Will & Grace” star wrote:
Please stand for the Star Spangled Banner.
Son: ‘Mom, I want to sit down in protest. Can we do that?’
Me: ‘Yes, honey. We can do that.’

Messing shared a photo of her son wearing a Rangers hat and jersey, sitting in his seat with his hand over his heart, rather than standing.

Many on social media took issue with Messing’s post, criticizing her for not instilling in her child a sense of patriotism and respect for the national anthem and American flag. Others criticized her for a perceived disrespect of military and law enforcement.
Messing has used social media in the past to show support for Black Lives Matter and athletes who kneel for the national anthem.
She recently tweeted out a link of Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee (D-Texas) kneeling in solidarity with NFL players, writing that it made her “teary.”
Messing has been an outspoken critic of President Trump, participating in the Women’s March in Jan. 2017 and a Tax Day protest last April.
Colin Kaepernick started the trend of NFL players refusing to stand for the anthem last year when he played quarterback for the San Francisco 49ers, in a protest against racial inequality and police brutality.
Although Kaepernick remained a free agent throughout the 2017 NFL season, other players and teams continued to protest, which has been a major source of controversy for the league.
